HDR Still Photo Interface (CTA-2072 R-2023)

HDR Still Photo Interface (CTA-2072 R-2023)

High dynamic range (HDR) images have brighter brights and darker darks than standard dynamic range images. Televisions capable of processing HDR video have been on the market for quite some time. There are CTA standards (CTA-861.4 and CTA-861-G) that together describe how two devices like a set-top box and TV set can communicate their HDR capabilities to one another and collectively give the viewer the best picture possible. But what if you’re not connecting two devices with a cable? What if instead you’re plugging a USB or SD Card storage device into a TV to display pictures from your digital camera? For that you need the file format used to store the pictures to be capable of storing HDR information, and you need the TV to be able to read that file format. CTA-2072 defines a file format for this purpose. It’s based on the Tagged Image File Format (TIFF).
